How to Be a Mentsh (and Not a Shmuck) gets its US launch at the Workmen’s Circle in New York City next month.
On Tuesday 27th October at 6.30pm Wex will be talking about his new book, signing copies, pressing flesh and answering questions at a launch held by the Workmen’s Circle.
If you’re in the New York area – drop by and say hello!
(Mentsh gets its Canadian launch in a couple of weeks on 21st September at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto. For all of Wex’s upcoming appearances go to our events page.)
This will certainly be a highlight of my brief stay in NY! (Will blow in from Berlin, Deutschland: Do you ever tour here??? plenty of ex-pats, Yiddishpliles, Jews in the Hauptstadt who would perhaps be interested…) Will shlepp along a friend whose family was active in the Arbitter-Ring and participated in their programs. A blast from the past for her. My 14-year old daughter and Sephardic partner have also been infected and should be attending, too! Looking forward to this event! ยง: )
Hi, Pesha,
I’ll be looking forward to seeing you and your entire entourage in New York. Funny you should ask about Germany; I turned down a gig in Fuerth only last week because they couldn’t meet my price. Otherwise, my book sales in Germany (only pre-Born to Kvetch stuff has been translated) never warranted a publisher bringing me over for a book tour.
I used to work there a lot, almost always in partnership with a musician named Heiko Lehmann, who started out in Aufwind, the klezmer band. The main shows that I did were called Sex in Jiddisch; Gott in Paris; Juedenverwolkung (about a bunch of people telling stories while riding on a cloud after meshiekh comes). In addition to the basic texts, they all had songs for which I wrote the lyrics (in Yiddish) and Heiko did the music. I’ve done some Yiddish lectures, too, though those took place a while ago: there’s more re-jigging than I would have expected.
But I’m happy to go back. Haven’t done anything in Germany since 2004 and actually kind of miss it.
Looking forward to seeing you in Oct. Be sure to say hello.
All the best and gmar tov,
Michael
